I read a ton of books every year, and yet I forget the plot and characters of most of them within days of putting the book down. Those characters became a part of my life and I still think of them often. Reading that massive novel as a teenager made me want to become a writer. Raena: This might be a surprising answer since I’m a Christian author, but Stephen King has been my greatest literary inspiration. WW: No one writes in a vacuum, so which author or book would you say has inspired you the most? Pennsylvania is a beautiful state and there’s lots of woods to hide in if you’re a subversive! I also set it in and around my hometown so I could visit the settings of my scenes and make them as vivid as possible. I put elements of our current world into the book intentionally because I wanted this world to feel like a very real, possible future. Lots of readers contacted me and said they enjoyed the world of Subversive because-while it was definitely futuristic-it was also frighteningly realistic. We don’t know how strong we can be until we’re placed in a bad situation and that inner-strength comes out. Most of us don’t realize that we have a hero hiding inside of us. But that’s a good thing, in a way, because it gives the characters depth and room to grow. In my mind, I could never be strong enough or brave enough to be anyone’s hero, and that negative self-perception tends to make its way into my main characters, especially early in their journeys. I definitely struggle a lot with self-doubt. I put a lot of myself into that character. Raena Rood: I love Gemma so much because she’s real. What’s your favourite thing about Gemma and her world? Writing Werewolf: I loved the Subversive trilogy so much, and such a large part of that was the unique setting and how well Gemma fitted in to it. But when his first love, Gemma, is captured by a rogue Task Force unit, his loyalties are put to the test.įacing interrogation and possible death, Gemma must summon the strength?and faith?to protect her friends, no matter the cost.Īnd Taylor must decide if he?s fighting against evil?or for it.My first ever featured author interview is with Raena Rood, creator of the Subversive series! He believes in his mission so much that he detained and imprisoned his own father. Taylor, a young Task Force officer, believes wholeheartedly in his mission and in the danger posed by subversives.
